
Family – Many children are taught never to talk to strangers, an extreme precaution with minimal security benefit. ... I think "don't talk to strangers" is just about the worst possible advice you can give a child.... Asking the help of a stranger is probably the best possible thing he can do.

What about using a safe word? That's what I plan to teach my children. Its a word that only the family and close family friends would know. And you teach your child that, if lost, it's ok to go with someone if they know the safe word. If there's no one with a safe word, teach them to approach a person with a uniform/name tag.
