"The nearly 4.3 million births in 2006 were mostly due to a bigger population, especially a growing number of Hispanics. That group accounted for nearly one-quarter of all U.S. births." "In 2006, for the first time, Hispanics accounted for more than 1 million births."
Wouldn't it interesting to know how many of these new children are in families that are receiving some type of government assistance or free medical care
How long can this country afford to keep adding 1 million children/year?

That's why the Catholic church are such ardent supporters of the Latino illegal immigration and will continue to be.
That old money basket stays full while it is passed around constantly while hearing mass impossible. After all the settled law suits against those many pedophiles priest the church is now broke and needs more members, wallah Latinos.

"It's kind of strange really, it seems that the poorer people are, the more babies they tend to have. It seems like it should be the other way around, maybe there is nothing else to do?"
It's because they've got the system worked out. More babies = more welfare benefits, funded by YOU and ME, the hard-working TAXPAYER. That, and, yes.....there's nothing else to do. When you don't work all day, and just sit around waiting for the welfare check to arrive, making babies is like falling off a log.
Feel like a chump, yet? I do.

Have you seen the movie "Idiocracy"? That's exactly how the movie begins... the lower class having a ton of babies and the middle/upper class waiting and having one, if any at all. Great movie.

No. It's science. There have been studies that the less secure (safe) people feel the more babies they have because they know (on an animal level) that it's likely more of them will die. It's a carryover from Evolution. Not some kind of welfare scam or religious zealotry.

America has experienced zero population growth from native born populations for years. Our rising population has been due to immigration; legal and illegal. One thing this story doesn't cover as a possibility is the war. Every time this nation goes to war, there is a "boom" of baby births. There was obviously a large one baby boom after WWII, but if you look for stories about it, you will find there was a small one after the first Gulf War also. There are probably small "booms" after Korea and Vietnam.

"Can you imagine a twenty-fold increase in oil production so the rest of the world can flame off oil at our rate?"
Can you imagine taking public transportation every once in a while to curb our consumption of oil? No, hyperbullsh*t, you can't, and neither can any of your other "liberal" colleagues. I haven't seen hide nor hair of you sanctimonious blowhards on the subway or the bus.
It's easy, isn't it hyperB.S., to yap on and on about how "the U.S. is consuming all the oil" and "Europe is on a better path for the future of mankind". What's not so easy is making a small difference in YOUR big, fat, useless waste of a life. Are YOU curbing YOUR use of oil, or are you just babbling on and on about how the rest of us need to?
Just wondering, hyperblather.

Guess what Etienne, I sold my last car 8 years ago, moved to a delightful city where I have a 2 mile beach on one side and a city on the other. There are 6 banks, 3 bookshops, about 15 restaurants (no fast food), a dozen bars, 5 supermarkets, 2 bakeries, a post office, 3 butchers, 4 schools, a firness training course, .... ALL within walking distance. Within 100 yards of my abode, I can jump on public transport that, ultimately, can take me almost anywhere. Oh, and my house is sufficiently well insulated that I heat for about 2 weeks a year (never cool).
Haven't had to drive in ages, can't imagine wasting my time in traffic, find life incredibly more interesting since I escaped suburban doom AND am much healthier since I walk a couple of miles every day.

Just how many of these babies in the latest "boomlet" here in the US are really the result of that gaping loophole in the 14th amendment ( The one that automatically bestows US citizenship on any person "born in these United States...")?
Methinks, another way to stop illegal immigration is by enacting a constitutional amendment that simply states,
"...any person or persons abusing, misusing, or "gaming" the US Consititution shall be deemd guilty of treasonous and inimical conduct and shall, if a lawful citizen of the US, be dealt with accordingly, and if not a US citizen shall be punished according to the law including deportation and permanent debarment from the US and its territories".

What the heck does that mean? "abusing, misusing or 'gaming'(?!) the US Constitution" that could mean anything. Do you want an centralized authoritarian state? Because that is exactly what you would get, and you could get it very quickly. Those words could make any reference to the Constitution or use of its provisions a crime, if whoever is in power wanted it to be one.
If that is what you are after you can go to almost any country in the world other then the US, and you will find all the authoritarianism you can stomach.
