I agree. No school should give out required homework. Homework should only be used to shore up bad test grades for students that do poorly on tests. Boys mostly hate doing homework and that turns them off on school, which has lasting effects. If girls want to be overachievers and do extra homework, they should be rewarded for that, but no child should be penalized for not doing it.

You'll be able to just download information around 2030 and school will no longer be needed.

I've always found review-type homework helpful, especially in math, where I always need extra help! This has been true throughout my entire academic career. Homework exercises served to anchor concepts learned in the classroom and help foster confidence.

Students hate homework when concepts have not been successfully taught/learned; then it's too hard. Everyone hates excessive homework because it's just that: Excessive.

I know every student/parent/teacher is different; perhaps someday, homework can be individually tailored to each student's needs.

I could have told them that. Unfortunately it's a tough problem, as you have to go on the basis of individual teachers and nobody likes that.

If the student doesn't get homework how will the day's lesson be reinforced? It's not about discipline it's about reinforcing a lesson. It's about practicing what's been learned.

Koranagirl, you have to be a shill here to stir up arguments. You can't be that stupid.

Well, I know that many of you, having read this one professor's opinion now believe it as fact, but there is plenty of debate on the issue:

                  http://www.aft.org/parents/k5homework.htm

My common sense tells me that re-inforcing what you learned that day is going to improve your skills.

Ever heard of "practice makes perfect?"

Do you imagine Tiger Woods could take a year off and be as good as he is when he practices and plays constantly?

When you are in third grade and learning to add double digit numbers for the first time, you absolutely benefit from going home that night and practicing. Practicing long division is a MUST. It takes skill that is only improved through practice, particularly the estimation part when choosing how many times the number will go into the other.

                  Do you people THINK?

Does anyone want to bring up the "No kid left behind " mess ?

Homework is needed to bring up scores so schools can get well needed funding.

Fine, maybe math homework, but what my daughter just now got in her 9th grade science boggles even my mom's mind... and she's a semi-retired high school math/science teacher. Her assignment was an out line of the entire chapter they are on... they had to write a summary sentence for EACH paragraph, EACH figure or illustration and they had to define 4 dozen vocabulary terms. THAT is NOT TEACHING... that is having stuidents make a textbook via Reader's Digest fashion. Her teacher told the students that it wasn't a lot of homework for the weekend... only about five hours worth and she gave them a species poster project that only took two hours, so in just science class she had SEVEN hours of homework over 3 days. That did not take into account her daily math homework, English, Spanish, Drama and Choir (yes, Choir even had an hour's worth of homework). Teachers rarely TEACH anymore, they just assign... that sounds like a kickback job to me, especially with all their paid holidays.

well, i agree and don't agree, at times homework really does help me, if theres something i forgot it's a nice little reminder or if i'm kinda scratchy on somethin, it helps me remember, however, sometimes the hw is just way to useless and is just busy work, that's when it gets annoying and we start complaining-and when we have way too much of it

For what purpose is society educating children? Is it to arm / equip kids to develop into all they can be, as balanced, caring people on an overcrowded planet ? Or is it to feed that bottomless pit called the economy? When a child is expected to sit in a classroom for more than half a day and then go home to reinforce the material covered for another four to six hours, I have no doubt that the tail is wagging the dog and we have lost our direction in life. The fact that evidence points to the ineffectiveness of homework only reinforces the issue that we are an increasingly results rather than process focused society - for better and worse.

TedNGilbert, only problem with your situation is that while you are correct that it is a stupid assignment and a sign of a poor teacher, it isn't the real issue here.

Homework IS a good thing, and necessary for retaining new skills. The "study" that casually dismisses homework will do untold harm as parents buy into it and demand less homework for their kids. But anyone who is HONEST with themselves knows you need to practice new skills to become good at them.

BAD TEACHERS and bad homework assignments are a whole other issue, and I agree with you on it!

This is the stupidest argument I have ever heard. Homework is about reinforcement! Classrooms present you with info - homework makes you think about what you learned and apply yourself. Anyone can "study" by themselves by staring blindly into a book, but no one can really prove what they actually understand except through homework! (and maybe tests...)
